My parents tell of the earlier days of their marriage when there was not enough money left in the budget after purchasing groceries to buy any ice cream. Imagine life without ice cream! At that time it was a luxury item that they just could not afford. Dessert became a bowl of fruit that was in season with some sugar sprinkled on top to make a sauce. While still very good, not much can beat ice cream for dessert. In fact, the fruit sauce would taste a lot better if it was poured on top of a dish of ice cream!
Today, disposable income for most people has grown to a point where we throw the premium ice cream into our shopping cart and don't even think twice about it. It has just become part of buying your weekly groceries and seems no different than a putting a box of cereal or soup into our shopping cart.
Ice cream and the toppings to go with it are now looked upon almost as necessity items. You don't have to drive very far to find a gourmet ice cream parlor serving up scoops of your favorite flavor for 3-5 dollars per cone or dish. Interesting how times have changed! What once was a luxury saved only for special occasions is now viewed as a almost a necessity that would be hard to give up. Maybe our standard of living isn't so bad after all.
